Ponpai Update 13 - Killer in the Woods!


Hi! It's been a hot minute, hasn't it? I've been hard at work on Ponpai as always, and I'm very excited to release this update! Here's what's new:

  • Chapter 4 has been added to the game in its entirety! Give or take some polish. Talk to Chris, the red-haired human, in the main hub to get started!
    • A protest against a dangerous pesticide is interrupted by rumours of a serial killer in the nearby woods! Go investigate!
    • Explore the peaceful Pyondi Forest, home of the Waycorns!
    • Get lost in the absolute maze of the dark forest! Watch out for pitfalls!
    • Take a visit to The Fig Leaf, a strip club within Pyondi Forest! Jasmine is canonically bisexual.
    • There's a new overworld theme for the dark forest, AND a new battle theme for anywhere in Pyondi Forest!
    • Cobb's bug hunting sidequest has been moved to Pyondi Forest.
    • A new Hide and Seek file is hidden somewhere! Get the app (in the main hub) first, then track it down!
    • There's a brand new boss with a brand new battle mechanic!
  • Speed now affects the ponpai's evasion in battle! The way it works is that every ponpai has a base 10% chance to dodge an attack, which goes up or down depending on how much faster or slower they are than the ponpai attacking! I did this because I wanted to make speed feel more useful as a stat.
  • New ponpai!
    • XX Batterby (pronounced "double X batter-bee), the ghosts of dead batteries looking to remain useful from beyond the grave!
    • Tarappa, ponpai with large spiky arms that can clap in the blink of an eye!
    • Hemoman, little drops of blood in a bone coat! (To celebrate my anemia diagnosis!)
    • Xenofaun, mysterious ghostly foxes without any organs!
    • Burnver, ponpai that consume trees to fuel their ever-burning tails!
    • Freteye, satyr-ish creatures who can predict the future!
    • Terralone, spooky ponpai that just want a friend!
    • There's 150 ponpai in the prototype now! That's just as many as that other game!
  • Parts of Chapter 8 have been adjusted for a cleaner experience!
  • There's a reset position button in battle! If you've misplaced your ponpai, you can teleport them back to where they were at the start of the turn! Note that if you've taken damage from traps, that won't be reverted.
  • The team health bars at the bottom are now positioned on top of each other, each one lowering towards the left (like the individual ponpai's health bars!)
  • Weta can now be found in battle once you're searching for bugs! Hit them with any attack to collect them. They will leave after the second round.
  • There's a sex and cheese shop by the coast! It sells sex toys, as well as a variety of different cheeses!
  • Also on the coast, you can talk to a Packaland and buy a womb (with hummus)!
  • Hovering your mouse over a ponpai will now give a brief description of what their status effect does, if they have one!
  • In battle, there's a little foggy area where the class sprites and mascot ponpai are!
  • A couple new options in the options menu:
    • You now have the option to toggle permanent running, as opposed to keeping the run button held!
    • There's now an option to have a highlight circle around the currently active ponpai in battle! Turn it on if you keep forgetting whose turn it is!
  • You can now initiate and control dialogue with the F or Enter keys! I'll be working towards making the game fully controllable through the keyboard. The Escape key also activates the pause menu!
  • There's a new pause menu background! Truth be told, this was supposed to be in the last update, but I forgot to make it actually accessible...
  • Fixed attack range sprites are now purely red! They don't have that unnecessary yellow pixel.
  • There's a content warning button on the title screen! Read it to see anything that may be triggering in this game!
  • There's two new variants of the Dancing Pendles on the title screen!
